Yoast SEO Plugin for WordPress by Joost de Valk is the best SEO plugin for WordPress. It has many built-in features making it the perfect SEO Plugin for anyone.
Setting up Yoast SEO may seem simple as it’s coming with a configuration wizard.
Are you doing it right?
Everything matters in SEO. Do you want to take that risk of setting up Yoast improperly?
No one wants to take such a risk when it comes to SEO, and you know the reason better than me.
If you haven’t installed Yoast SEO plugin, you can install it now from, Plugins » Add New » Search for Yoast SEO » Click on Install Now » Activate.
We will be covering everything you need to know to setup Yoast SEO plugin on your WordPress blog.
We will be going through the plugin configuration options in this order,
- Titles & Metas
- XML Sitemaps
- Search Console
You can install Yoast SEO using the Configuration Wizard or you can do everything manually. But I recommend going with the Configuration wizard as you won’t miss any necessary setting in it.
To start the Configuration Wizard, go to Dashboard of Yoast SEO plugin.
This page actually contains some general settings of Yoast SEO. You will be taken to all these settings in the Configuration wizard.
There’s nothing to do in the dashboard for now. But remember you should check if there are any notifications here.
The plugin informs you about the errors and other necessary notification here in the dashboard. So, keep an eye on it. And fix the errors as soon as you find it. For now, we can go to General Settings of Yoast SEO.
Starting with Configuration Wizard
Click on Open the configuration wizard.
You will be redirected to a configuration page. There are 12 steps in this configuration, including the first welcome page. After completing 12th steps, you will be redirected to Yoast SEO plugin Dashboard of your WordPress site.
2. Click on CONFIGURE YOAST SEO.
Select Production and click on NEXT.
Production, if your site is live and you are getting traffic to the site.
Staging, if it is a clone of your original site which is being used for testing.
Development, if your site is under development.
We chose Production because our site is live and we are getting traffic to the site.
4. Site Type
We are configuring Yoast SEO plugin on a blog. So, we selected Blog here.
Select Blog or whatever your site type is and click on NEXT.
Company or Person?
You can either choose Company or Person. We are choosing Company as BlogBing is not a single person.
We chose Company and uploaded a logo. If you choose person, you won’t be asked to upload a logo.
Click on Next.
5. Social Profiles
This is one of the important settings and you should fill the boxes with your social media profile links. This is not mandatory but recommended.
5. Post visibility
Adjust the settings as shown in the image. Make posts and pages visible and hide the media.
6. Multiple Authors
If your blog contains multiple permanent authors, then you can choose Yes. If you are allowing guest posts and creating contributor accounts for them, you can choose No. Because most of them will be a one-time contributor to the blog.
7. Connect with Search Console
You can connect your Google Search Console with Yoast SEO. Sitemaps will be submitted to the Search Engine automatically by this plugin.
But for that, you need to do a one-time authentication to verify the site on Google Search Console.
- Click on GET GOOGLE AUTHORIZATION CODE.
- It will open a new tab on your browser asking you to sign into your Google account.
- Sign in with your account which you have used to verify your site on Search Console.
- Now, copy the verification code and paste it into the box in the configuration wizard.
- Click on AUTHENTICATE.
- After authentication, click on NEXT.
But, wait! you should visit Yoast SEO webmaster section and verify on Bing and Yandex(recommended).
8. Title Settings
- Type your Site name in the box.
- Click on NEXT.
- You can subscribe to Yoast SEO newsletter or click on NEXT.
- Click on NEXT.
Success! You have completed the first part of Yoast SEO Setup.
- Click on CLOSE and you will be redirected to the general settings page.
- Click on Save Changes.
We have taken a round via the Configuration wizard. But it isn’t enough!
Let’s take a look on every setting now.
Begin with Dashboard or General Settings of the plugin
There are many sub menus here in Dashboard of Yoast SEO,
- Company info
- Webmaster tools
We can go to Features directly, as you know that dashboard is for showing notifications and General setting contain the Configuration Wizard. So, let’s take a look at the features section.
You can enable and disable the features as seen in the image or as your wish. Because these are just some tools or features that help you in some ways. And it’s your preferences.
What is Cornerstone Content?
You will have an option to mark your post as cornerstone content in the post editor. Have you ever marked any of your posts as Cornerstone?
Cornerstone contents are used as a filter in your posts section to identify your best and epic posts. And personally, I don’t think that it has any effect on SEO.
Webmaster tools, we have something to do here!
We have already verified Google Search Console with Yoast SEO plugin. But we didn’t connect it with Bing or Yandex which are next big search engines.
- Click on the link (Bing Webmaster Tools and Yandex Webmaster Tools) to verify your site on it.
- On clicking on the link, a new tab will be opened and there you can sign in with your email id which you have used for adding your site on webmaster tools.
Moving out of general settings now and going to Title & Meta settings of Yoast SEO plugin.
Title & Meta
We can leave general setting here as it was about Separators which was already chosen from the configuration wizard. So, let’s move to Homepage section.
- Give your Site Name and Tag line in the title template box.
For example, if your site name is “BlogBing” and tag line is “Managed Cloud For Bloggers”, then it should be like
BlogBing : Managed Cloud For Bloggers
Note, you can use any separator you like.
You can also write a description about your site in Meta Description box. This will be shown as the description of your site on search engines.
That’s all in homepage section.
In Post type section,
- Use the title template as %%title%%.
In the first one, you can see the site name with the post title.
Hosting Review Now is the site name and BlogBing Hosting Review is the post title. So, the tag used is %%title%%%%sep%%%%sitename%%.
%%title%% - Post title %%sep%% - Separator %%sitename%% - Site name
And in the last one, they have shown only the post title. And the tag used there is %%title%%.
You can choose post title with site name or post title without site name. It’s your preference. But I recommend using only post title.
And you can see the image and enable/disable other settings according to it.
It’s similar for Taxonomies and Archives.
In Other section, set as shown in the image.
We have done adding our social profiles from Configuration Wizard. And we don’t have much to do in Social section of Yoast SEO plugin.
But still, there is something to configure!
Enable Open Graph meta data. This data will be shown when you share your site on Facebook.
- Enable the Add Twitter card metadata.
- You can choose your preferred card type. Summary with large image is recommended.
You should confirm your site with Pinterest here. For that, click on the link and a guide to confirm the site with Pinterest will be opened. Follow the instructions to confirm your site with Pinterest.
Type the link to your Google Plus Business page, if you have any.
There’s nothing more to do in Social section.
So, go to Sitemap section.
Yoast SEO plugins submit sitemaps for you. You can find your sitemap by adding /sitemap_index.xml after your domain name.
You can go to Taxonomies section of it and setup as seen in the image.
There’s another important feature in Yoast SEO.
That’s the Search Console, the plugin fetches the search console data and shows everything there. You can find and fix errors from there itself.
There’s an even better version of Yoast SEO plugin. It’s the premium version of the Yoast SEO plugin. Redirect in Premium version is the best feature of it which allows you to redirect 404 pages to another link quickly and fix all errors in search console.
Done setting up Yoast SEO for WordPress plugin.
Have you seen something like this?
This is the thing that you should check whenever you wrote a post. These are the suggestions to improve your post.
Above this, there is a box where you can edit custom Title and Meta Description for Search Engines and Social Networking sites.

You can do this on all your posts and pages.
